Work Study

Work study is a financial aid award that allows students to earn money through an on-campus job.  The award is only realized if a student obtains a qualifying job and works each week to earn a bi-weekly paycheck.

LSU offers 2 types of work study awards: Federal College Work Study Program & President’s Student Aid.

To check if you have Federal Work Study or President’s Study Aid:

  • Work Study is automatically accepted if awarded on your account, meaning you do not need to take any action in workday.
  • Continuing students - login to your workday account. On the Workday homepage, navigate to Your Top Apps and click the Financials Hub. Under the Overview section you can click on Accept/Decline Awards under Financial Aid Awards and enter the applicable Award Year. You will be able to see the awards that have been offered and/or accepting on your account for the award year along with the ability to take action on any awards.
    • New students – login to your LSUAM External Student Site. On the External Student Site homepage, click View my Financial Aid Packages. On the View My Financial Aid Packages page, click the estimated award package. When reviewing the Estimated Financial Aid Details & Estimated Cost Details for the academic year, you will be able to see a breakdown of each award that was included in your financial aid package, including work study.
    • The amount listed is the amount of funds that could be earned by obtaining a job on-campus.

Federal Work-Study

The Federal Work-Study Program allows students who show financial need to earn money to assist with their educational expenses.

Work-Study is usually $3,000 for fall/spring or $3,600 for summer/fall/spring but it can vary according to your need-based eligibility. This is determined through the FAFSA and whatever aid you may already have (grants, scholarships, etc.)

Applying for and Receiving Federal Work Study

  1. Submit the FAFSA Annually: Students interested in Work Study should file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon after October 1 as possible each year, because this program has limited funding.
  2. Check if you were awarded work study
  3. Apply for Employment Opportunities: You can apply to either on-campus employment or community service work site opportunities through Handshake. Students will go through a traditional application process to secure employment in order to earn the wages from their Work Study funding.

President's Student Aid

The President's Student Aid Program is an LSU funded work study program awarded with certain freshman merit-based scholarships that offers students an opportunity to earn money while in school.

Students can earn up to approximately $1,550 for fall/spring as payment for their work in a student employment position.  President’s Student Aid is awarded for 4 years (8 semesters) if students maintain the retention requirements including 24 credit hours earned over the academic year and a 2.0 cumulative GPA.

Applying for and Receiving President’s Student Aid Funding

  1. Check if you were awarded President’s Student Aid
  2. Apply for Employment Opportunities: You can apply to on-campus employment opportunities through Handshake. Students will go through a traditional application process to secure employment in order to earn the wages from their Work Study funding.

Eligibility

Students participating in the Work Study program can work up to 20 hours per week and earn up to approximately $3,000 per year. Students earn an hourly wage and are paid bi-weekly. Students must meet all requirements as outlined in Policy Statement 33.
