Area of interest:

I am a biology education researcher and my works seeks to understand why students have different outcomes within STEM higher education; specifically my research focuses on students' resource use as a potential driver of these differences.

Within the context of STEM higher education students have access to many different kinds of resources: social resources like classmates, friends, teaching assistants and instructors; material resources like textbooks, lecture materials, and self-created study materials; institutional resources like the library or tutoring centers. Beyond these, imagine all of the resources available to students online, such as AI chatbots, YouTube videos, help forums, and so on.  We know that which resources students use impact their outcomes and that resource use is highly heterogeneous among students. Yet, much about resource use is still unclear, including what patterns exist in students' resource use, how resource use changes over time, and what factors may predict students' resource use patterns.

My lab leverages both in-depth qualitative data and large-scale quantitative data to address these questions.
